Rosie's First Rodeo: How to Plan an Elevated First Birthday on a Real-Life Budget

They call the 11th month the "long goodbye" — and, man, do I understand why.
During that last month of their first year, you watch your baby become a toddler in real time. There's this explosion of learning — new sounds, maybe first words, maybe first steps. Or maybe none of those yet, but something new all the same. Something that makes you catch your breath and makes you want to hold onto those days of babyhood a little tighter.
That was exactly what this season felt like for us.
But somewhere around Christmas, as I watched Rosie experience so many firsts, something shifted in me.
I realized that every goodbye to one phase is really just a hello to another.
We are entitled to our nostalgia, of course, but that perspective helped me feel excited instead of just emotional.
Because every time she learns something new, I genuinely feel like it's the greatest thing in the world. And what a privilege it is to watch the tiny human you grew, grow into each new milestone.
And that's what made celebrating her first birthday feel so incredibly special. Even more so, everything it took to get us to this day was a celebration all its own. If you’re new here, you can read that story here.
Best Laid Plans of Mothers & Milestones
I had Rosie's theme picked out when she was about six months old, and I'm so glad I did, because those next six months absolutely flew by.
We landed on: Rosie's First Rodeo. 🤍
And then, of course, not everything went according to plan. We had a major ice storm here in Texas, and my brother's family from Dallas wasn't able to make it. I was devastated. All those months of dreaming and planning and some of my favorite people wouldn’t be there to celebrate.
But, I don’t live in disappointment anymore. Life has thrown me a curveball or two so I’ve had to learn how to pivot.
And that’s exactly what we did. We pushed the party to the following weekend, hoping things would thaw — but unfortunately, they did not. We ended up with about half the guests we expected, but still turned it into the best day.
Beautiful Doesn't Have to Be Expensive: Here’s How I Did It on a Budget
I'm a mom who wants beautiful things. But I also need them to be realistic. Champagne taste…well, you know the rest.
The reality is, I'm a single mom on a budget. Yes, I'm incredibly grateful to be living with my parents right now after having to suddenly leave my marriage — but at the end of the day, the financial responsibility is mine. And I didn't want anyone else carrying that weight.
My goal for this party was simple: keep it affordable, keep it meaningful, and make it feel just a little elevated.
I’m sharing what worked for me so that if you’re planning a first birthday on a budget, you can create something that feels just as special, no matter the theme.
The biggest way I made that happen — and kept my sanity in the process — was by spreading everything out over time. It all started with a spreadsheet. Don’t even get me started on my love for a good spreadsheet...or seven. This obsession intensified after Rosie came along, but I’ve always been part nerd, part control freak, and part Type B, so let’s just say they calm my nervous system.
I started by adding her birthday gifts to the list, then decor ideas, and slowly added ideas as I did my research nerd search on Pinterest or Etsy. This gave me an actual dollar amount to work with and stick with. I began buying things in October and November, grabbed a few more in December, and finished everything in January.
So, the beauty and experience of the party were a bit of an illusion because you would never have guessed it was done so simply and affordably. Mission accomplished.
It never felt like one big overwhelming expense. And it never felt overwhelming mentally, either. I used this same approach to picking out her decor and creating tiny, meaningful moments. You can find The Quick List here for all the decor.
So simplicity was the name of the game. Because here’s the thing — crafting and DIY are not my forte.
I walk into a Hobby Lobby and people can tell I don't belong there.
I didn't want to stress myself out trying to do everything perfectly all at once. I wanted to enjoy the process and celebrate my girl.
So I kept things simple, did a little at a time, and focused on what actually mattered — HER.
She's only going to turn one once.
Rosie's Birthday Outfit: Luxe for Less
Let's start with one of my favorite details of the entire day — because this is such a good example of how I approach spending on my girl.
Around Christmas, I was at Nordstrom when I spotted the most incredible metallic boots. Something I would 1000% wear if Tucker + Tate made them in my size, but these were the tiniest little version.
My mama heart exploded.
AND were 50% off.
I practically ripped them off the shelf. A size or two too big, but she’s not walking yet right? We live in Texas, she’ll grow into them and wear them for months.
Every girl deserves a great pair of cowboy boots. Would I have paid full price? Absolutely not — Mama's got a budget. But marked down? Done.
I paired them with a $12 smocked rodeo bubble from Amazon — honestly, we buy these for everything. Holidays, photos, special occasions. They never miss, and they look at least three times more expensive than they are. Champagne taste without the price tag once again. Yes, please.
She did have a traditional bow, but the real star was her hat. We finished the look with a $5 pink cowboy hat from Hobby Lobby. I added a peel-and-stick rhinestone "R" to the front for Rosemary. My DIY skills are truly remarkable.
Here’s a similar pink cowboy hat. Grab your rhinestone letters from Hobby Lobby or Walmart.
It was quite possibly the most adorable thing I have ever seen in my entire life.

Simple & Affordable Desserts (That Still Felt Special)
We kept desserts easy and local. I ordered Rosie's birthday cake and cupcakes from HEB — our grocery store here in Texas — no. THE grocery store in Texas, to which I pledge my loyalty. Forever. The desserts were just what I asked for, beautiful, and affordable.
At the last minute, I realized I didn’t have a cake stand, so I repurposed one of my mom’s salad bowls and I honestly love it even more.
Instead of cupcakes, we almost did petit fours—my favorite. But after consulting my six-year-old nephew, Hubert, (obviously a critical party planning resource), he strongly protested.
Cupcakes it was. 😂 And honestly? It was the right call.
One of the very first things I purchased for the party was a cake topper from Etsy — around $12 — and it pulled the whole thing together. Such an easy way to make a simple grocery store cake feel completely custom.
One small detail, big impact.

The Custom Banner
One of the most eye-catching pieces from the entire party was a custom banner made by a local artist, Graceful Sky. She absolutely nailed it — it was exactly what I had envisioned — and she gave me such a fair price for something that added so much fun and personality to the space.
Graceful Sky ships in the US. You can find her on Instagram, @bannersbygracefulsky 💕
If you're looking for one place to dedicate a little more of your budget? This is it. A single statement piece can completely transform a room.
The DIY First Year Photo Banner
This was one of my favorite personal touches — and it was surprisingly easy for someone who has no business being in a craft store.
I selected my favorite photos of Rosie from newborn through 12 months, zoomed in so her chunky face was the focus, and printed them at CVS. Then I cut them out, added tiny cowboy hat stickers from Amazon to each one, and attached them to twine.
That's it.
It turned out so cute that I saved it in her memory box — which I think says everything.
The Table: Elevated Not Complicated
Here's where a few small, intentional choices did a lot of heavy lifting.
Disclaimer: my mother has exceptional taste. She has a unique eye for pattern mixing and curates beautiful spaces in ways that are equally unexpected and inviting. That is to say, having my parents’ home, and her tablescape as the backdrop was a definite bonus that is not lost on me.
I found vintage-style paper plates on Amazon that were a great dupe for the real thing — but with zero cleanup. After hosting a first birthday party, minimal cleanup is everything.
I paired them with larger coordinating plates from Hobby Lobby (on sale, of course) and simple pink napkins (also on sale). It added just the right amount of femininity and elegance to a rodeo theme without overcomplicating anything.
Momo’s floral arrangement + feminine & elegant paper plates—affordable luxury
While we were at Hobby Lobby, I stumbled across something that became one of my favorite little details of the whole day.
Since Rosie's birthday is in January, all the Valentine's Day decor was already out — and I found a heart garland with the exact number of hearts as the letters in her full name: Rosemary. Eight hearts. Eight letters.
I grabbed a white paint pen we had at the house and wrote one letter on each heart, then used it as part of the tablescape on the dining room table.
Simple. Inexpensive. And so personal.
My mom also found the most perfect boot-shaped vase at HEB — because we live in Texas and of course you can find a boot vase at the grocery store.
Boot vase floral arrangement + something for her baby book
She has a gift with flowers, so she created a beautiful arrangement for the table along with a few smaller ones sprinkled throughout the house. Flowers from? You guessed it. HEB. And one of my favorite little touches? She tucked photos of Rosie into the arrangements.
It tied everything together in the most effortless, meaningful way.
First Impressions: The Entryway
As guests walked in, they were greeted with a few of my favorite photos of Rosie — and some of us together — which made the whole space feel instantly personal and warm. Just a few framed ones I grabbed from around the house.
We added farm animal balloons, including one oversized statement balloon, to bring the theme to life the moment you walked through the door.
By the time people stepped inside, we were already in party mode.
The Biggest Hit: Our Little "Petting Zoo"
This might have been everyone's favorite part of the entire party — and it was one of the easiest things we put together.
My mom found a set of stuffed farm animals on Amazon, along with a miniature white picket fence. She added some green Easter basket grass to create a little petting zoo setup. Rosie got to pick her animal first — she chose the duck, which I absolutely called — and then each guest got to take one home as a party favor.
I made a simple sign for one of Rosie’s favorite songs that said:
"E-I-E-I-O… please take one before you go."
Adopt a Pet. Interactive, adorable, and doubled as a party favor.
It was one of the easiest ways to make the party feel special without spending very much at all.
The Honest Takeaway
Here's what I want you to walk away with:
A beautiful, meaningful first birthday does not require a big budget.
It requires a little intentionality, a little patience, and the willingness to spread it out so it never feels like too much at once.
Buy the grocery store cake.
Print those photos at CVS.
Flip over a dang salad bowl at the last minute and you’ve got yourself a cake stand.
Invest in one statement piece that makes the whole room pop and feel elevated — and let everything else be simple.
And if a force of nature cuts your guest list in half?
PIVOT.
Give yourself permission to bypass the perfectionism.
It will still be everything you hoped it would be because you have brought an entire human into the world, and you get to spend the day showering them with love and celebration. That’s it.
They are only going to turn one once — and the love in that room is what they'll grow up hearing stories about. Not the budget.
