Sanity & Spinners: My 8 Holy Grail Baby & Toddler Essentials That Saved My Sleep & Sanity

I LOVE research. Yes, I’m a total nerd. I’m talking full-on, down the rabbit hole, cannot put my phone down—research NERD.

If I’m going to spend my hard-earned money on something, invite it into my home, and trust it with my child? Then I’m going to make sure I’ve gathered every single piece of information possible to make the best choice.

That was true when I created my baby registry while pregnant and it is true today when I buy something for my 14 month old (toddler? 🥹). I don’t care if it is $10 or $200, I will go down a rabbit hole—Amazon reviews, Pinterest lists, and Tik Tok comparisons—to find the absolute best.

As a first time mother, it’s incredibly difficult to know if you are making the right choice because you’re brand new to the job. They place this tiny, fragile, beautiful thing in your hands without a manual or the proper accessories. Creating a registry is particularly difficult because most things won’t make sense until they get here.

So, ultimately, I climbed out of the rabbit hole (mostly) and trusted my intuition. These are the things that truly improved my quality of life, helped me maintain my sanity, and made daily life easier. Essentials in every sense of the word. You’ll find items as low as $10 and a couple of hotly debated higher end items because they are just that good (those items were shower gifts, and I’m incredibly grateful).

They all have one thing in common—they were game changers.

The Newborn Survival Phase: Recovery & Nights Alone

These were the things that got me through the newborn stage—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

A postpartum mom recovering and holding her sleeping newborn

newborn snuggles… powered by an ice pack bra and the famous postpartum “sandwich”

The Postpartum Sandwich: Why Frida Baby is a Hospital Bag Must-Have

Let’s go back to the beginning. You’ve seen this everywhere for a reason. It’s just that good.

To say my labor was difficult would be an understatement. After a failed epidural (yes, the myths about redheads being genetic mutants and needing more anesthesia are true! How fun!), I pushed for three hours to bring my beautiful 99th percentile baby girl into the world.

Rosemary Elizabeth, my “Rosie”

I was exhausted, in horrific pain, and devastated that she was in the NICU on the opposite side of the hospital. Against my nurse’s orders, I decided to ditch the wheelchair one day and WALK to get to my girl faster. Well, that ended with me in tears and doubled over from the pain.

Enter Savannah, a nurse I’m convinced is an actual angel among us. She saw my struggle and gently said, “Honey, this will make you feel better,” before using my Frida Postpartum Recovery Kit to make the famous “postpartum sandwich”.

Here’s the truth: hospital and Amazon equivalents are not the same. This kit is superior. The peri bottle actually has the reach you need, and the disposable underwear is surprisingly comfortable when nothing else is.

The healing foam and cooling pad liners actually do what they promise and provide pain relief. But the Instant Ice Maxi Pads? They are the crown jewel. Unlike other brands that feel hard or scratchy, these are soft, cooling, and provide full coverage. When I was at my lowest, this “postpartum sandwich” was one of the only things that offered real relief.

Sanity at 2 AM: How the Baby Brezza Saved My Nights

I couldn’t breastfeed.

When mothers say that, they’re often met with a kind of judgment no one has any right to give. I’m tempted to launch into a passionate speech about how fed is best—but I won’t… at least not right now.

What I will say is this: the way a mother chooses to feed her child is deeply personal. It’s shaped by individual circumstances, by health, by life—by things no one else can fully see or understand.

For me, it wasn’t even a choice. I’m on a medication I cannot go off of, which meant breastfeeding was never an option.

I was heartbroken.

And I didn’t owe anyone an explanation.

On top of that, I was doing nights alone.

As a single mom, there wasn’t an extra set of hands at 2 AM. And the truth is, for many moms, there isn’t—single or not. When she woke up crying, I needed a bottle fast. In the dark. Half asleep. No thinking required.

The Baby Brezza changed everything. It made the bottle instantly. No scooping, no measuring, no guessing. No squinting in the dark, no formula on the floor, just fast food. And she was happy. I knew it was mixed correctly every time, and more importantly—she wasn’t crying while I stood there trying to figure it out.

It was such a small window of time, but in those early days, that time felt like everything.

This wasn’t just convenient—it was sanity-saving.

Reclaiming Sleep: Why the Owlet Was My First Luxury

After Rosie got out of the NICU, I literally watched her sleep.

Rosie’s actual nighttime sleep summary from June 2025. She was 4.5 months old—sleeping 11-12 hours a night with no wake-ups.

She had some respiratory issues at birth that were resolved, but that didn’t stop that fear center in my brain. I was watching her constantly—every breath, every movement. I literally was afraid my blanket was going to fall into her bedside bassinet and smother her. Please tell me I’m not alone in that one, because my mother was very concerned.

I was not okay

And I was exhausted.

It sounds ridiculous, but it makes me emotional to write about. Those early days were so challenging and I don’t think we get honest enough about just how challenging they are. People were genuinely worried about my mental health because I wasn’t sleeping. Then I started using the Owlet Sock.

Owlet Dream Sock - Smart Baby Monitor View Heart Rate, Average Oxygen O2, & Sleep Quality Indicators

And I cannot overstate what it did for me.

It gave me peace of mind that I truly can’t put a price on—which is why it’s the first luxury item on this list.

I could finally lay down without feeling like I had to watch her every second. Once I trusted it, I started sleeping again.

And not only that—it helped me understand how she was sleeping. I could see patterns, track her sleep cycles, and it ended up helping with sleep training later on. She was sleeping through the night by about two and a half months, but that’s a story for another time.

It didn’t just track her—it gave me my sanity back.

The Dinner Time Sanity Duo

Two simple swaps that turned mealtime cleanup from overwhelming to actually manageable.

One of my least favorite parts of motherhood is cleanup after a meal.

my favorite girl and her favorite food…everywhere

And yes, I said my least favorite part of motherhood.

Apparently that’s taboo, but we don’t sugarcoat here.

I was so excited when she started eating solids. We’ve had so much fun trying new foods, figuring out what she likes, testing recipes, even finding easy & healthy freezer options. But that end-of-meal mess?

I could never get it right. It felt like it took forever to clean up—and I was doing it three times a day.

And the worst part?

I thought I had done everything right.

The Ultimate $25 High Chair Swap

One of the first things I put on my registry was this adorable Graco high chair. It had the cutest floral padding, matched our house…I was obsessed.

And I cannot tell you how much time I spent complaining about that thing.

It was hard to clean.

Clunky to move.

Covered in crevices where food would get stuck.

Not easy to get her in and out of.

The latch felt flimsy.

I was done.

Then we were at my aunt’s house for Christmas, and my cousin—who had a baby a month before me—had this plain white high chair. And I was like…what is that?

She told me it was from IKEA.

Twenty-five dollars.

She told me how easy it was to clean, how lightweight it was, how little space it took up in the house.

So affordable and so functional.

And honestly? That was my turning point.

Because this is such a good example of how we have to course-correct in motherhood. We don’t actually know what’s going to work until we’re living it.

And just because you spent $100 on something doesn’t mean you have to keep using it.

Sell it on Facebook Marketplace.

Use that money to buy the IKEA Antilop high chair.

Do whatever you want with what’s left—maybe buy something for you, or move that special little find for your little nugget back into your Amazon cart.

This one just makes life easier.

It wipes clean in seconds.

No crevices.

You can remove the tray, dump everything in the sink or trash, wipe it down, and you’re done.

Add a mess mat underneath?

Game changer.

Because at the end of the day—time matters.

And anything that saves you time, especially three times a day, is worth it.

IKEA Antilop high chair.

The Mess-Free High Chair Mat

This is one of my most recent—and one of my favorite—purchases.

And it just so happens to be $10.

While the IKEA high chair solved the clunkiness, the crevices, and the overall cleanup situation…it did not solve the mess on the floor.

Babies are babies.

They love cause and effect.

And they love dropping food on the floor.

That’s just what they do.

But cleaning it up doesn’t have to be complicated.

This mat is as simple as it gets. It’s waterproof, washable, and takes all of two minutes to clean.

I fold up each corner, trap the mess inside, dump it in the trash, the sink—or outside for the deer—wipe it down, and I’m done.

Under two minutes.

Which means more time with my girl.

And that time is precious.

Together, this and the IKEA high chair?

Time. Sanity. Money.

Quite the trifecta.

The Great Stroller Debate: To Doona or Not to Doona?

You know that TikTok trend—the dad in the backwards hat, gray sweatpants, carrying the baby out of the hospital for the first time?

Yeah.

I didn’t get that.

I left my husband when I was two months pregnant. And that doesn’t mean I look at those videos and feel anything negative—it’s just… that wasn’t my story.

My mom carried my baby out of the hospital.

And she’s not that into Tik Tok.

I had spent hours—hours—researching the perfect travel system before Rosie was born.
And then I had a 99th percentile baby.

And a lot of single mom moments.

Loading the car.

Unloading the car.

Folding the stroller.

Struggling to unfold the stroller.

Forgetting how to even use the thing because my postpartum brain was so bad.

Trying to get through aisles with a stroller that was way too wide when all we wanted was a little girl time.

It hit a real pain point for me.

And here’s the thing.

There aren’t many moments where I sit and think, I’m doing this alone.

But without fail?

It’s when I’m loading the car.

Packing for a trip.

Getting her in and out.

That’s when it hits.

I get flustered. Sometimes emotional. I just…want help.

So then came the great debate.

My mom kept bringing up the Doona and offering to buy one.

I kept saying absolutely not. There is no world where we are spending $650 on a stroller.

Well.

I am here to tell you—I ate my words.

Think about it.

How often do you use your car seat or stroller?

Every single day.

Multiple times a day.

And when every single use feels frustrating?

It adds up fast.

I was so tired of:

The heavy lifting.

The awkward carrying.

Hooking my arm through the handle and cutting off my circulation just trying to carry my very large baby inside.

The clunky stroller.

The giant base that supposedly has “so much storage.”

Your diaper bag has storage. What more do we need?

I needed ease.

So I caved.

And my mom, graciously, bought it—and I know how fortunate I am for that.

And this thing was magical. It changed everything.

baby smiling in Doona car seat stroller comfortable and functional stroller all in one

Rosie was just as big of a Doona fan as we were! A comfortable & functional win for mom & baby.

How we moved through our day.

How we went on outings.

How it felt to walk into a restaurant.

No more side-shuffling.

No more feeling in the way.

No more wrestling a stroller in public.

We used it for almost a year.

And every single time?

It justified the price.

And when she outgrew it?

We sold it on Marketplace for $400.

You do the math.

Still wondering if it’s worth it?

It is.

An Old Classic: The Umbrella Stroller

You know the worst thing about the Doona?

When your baby outgrows it.

When I tell you my mom and I were so sad when we sold it… I’m a little embarrassed by how bummed we were—but that’s what it meant to us.

It gave us freedom.
Flexibility.
The ability to just get out and do things.

So when we sold it, we were like…

Okay. Now what?

I knew one thing for sure:

I was not going back to a big travel system stroller.

The wide base.
The clunkiness.
All the pieces.
Trying to figure it out in a parking lot with a baby.

No. Just NO.

And yes—those strollers have their place.

But they weren’t what I needed.

I needed ease.
Simplicity.
Something that didn’t stress me out.

Because here’s the truth—

I don’t often think about doing this alone.

But I feel it when I’m loading the car, running errands, getting in and out quickly.

I didn’t want something that made those moments harder.

I just wanted it to be easy.

So we went back to an old classic:

The umbrella stroller—specifically the Ingenuity 3D Mini.

About $70.

Ingenuity 3D Mini Convenience Stroller – Lightweight Stroller with Compact Fold with multi-position recline for Rosie’s comfort. As you can see, she approves.

And this one?

It just works.

Opens with one hand.
Lightweight with effortless foldability.
Slim base (very similar to the Doona, which mattered a lot to me).
Fits through aisles and maneuvers easily.

And it still holds my diaper bag.

The best part?

Travel.

Throw it in the car.

Done.

No thinking.
No pieces.
No frustration.

Post-Doona?

Done with your clunky stroller?

Or need an extra stroller for travel?

This is the move.

The $10 Holy Grail: Why Spinners Are My Hero Product

And for the grand finale… spinners.

You probably thought I was going to say the Doona, right?

And now you might be thinking—

is this woman really about to tell me her holy grail product is a $10 pack of spinners?

And that would be a resounding yes.

Because let me ask you this:

How much is 20 or 30 minutes of your time worth?

Is it $10?

What about $10 for 20 or 30 minutes of uninterrupted time?

Because that’s what these are.

And what about 20 or 30 minutes of joy for your child?

That’s what these are.

Invaluable.

Here she is playing with her favorite pack of spinners.

When Rosie was only a couple of weeks old, her favorite thing in the world was fans.

It didn’t matter where she saw one—she looked at it like she was honored to be in its presence. Just completely in awe. Mesmerized by the spinning.

And that’s where this all started.

She’s been playing with these since she was about 3 or 4 months old, and we never leave the house without one.

We love these popper spinners too: Suction Cup Spinner Sensory Airplane Travel Toys

They’re everywhere.

In the car.

In the diaper bag.

In my purse.

In my mom’s car.

In the bathtub.

On the changing table so she doesn’t alligator roll.

Doctor’s office.

Grocery store.

Long car rides.

They go where we go.

And I know—

it sounds so simple.

But that’s just it…

There’s beauty in its simplicity.

(I cannot believe I just said that about a spinner toy, but here we are.)

We spend all this money on expensive electronic toys, motorized mini Range Rovers, every “must-have” toy Tik Tok throws at us.

And don’t get me wrong—we have a variety of toys. I love to splurge for my girl just as much as the next mom…

But I do it intentionally.

And when something this simple works this well?

It’s priceless.

This isn't just a toy.

It's a quiet moment.

It's independent play.

It's attention span.

It's hand-eye coordination.

It's peace on a road trip.

And it's the moment I feel like I'm about to lose my mind — and I hand her one so I can take a breath.

My holy grail. My grand finale.

Spinners.

At the end of the day, these aren’t just products.

They’re the things that made my life easier—giving me back my time, my peace, and a little more breathing room.

And in this season of life, who can put a price on that?
